A proposal to protect and enhance water quality in Dickinson has won tentative approval under a new state program designed to improve Iowa watersheds.

At a meeting Monday, the Watershed Improvement Board made preliminary awards for 17 projects totaling more than 4.7 million dollars.

A project in Dickinson county was awarded nearly 487-thousand dollars. The Dickinson County Urban Watersheds plan will offer cost-share incentives and technical expertise to existing residential and business owners willing to establish low-impact development practices such as rain gardens, bio-swales and pervious paving designed to reduce storm-water runoff into lakes and streams.

The Iowa Legislature earmarked five million dollars for the new program, which is overseen by a 15-member review board.

48 projects applied for funding through the program. 17 projects totaling 4.7 million dollars in funding were approved.
